Misconduct in Research

It is the policy of the University to conduct research activities in a responsible and ethical fashion. In carrying forward its responsibility, the University has established formal procedures, approved by its Board of Trustees, for the review and investigation of allegations of misconduct in scholarship and research. These procedures do not supersede or set up alternatives to established procedures for resolving other kinds of misconduct, such as fiscal improprieties, issues concerning the ethical treatment of human or animal subjects, and criminal matters. Furthermore, it is University policy to conduct an investigation of any charge in a manner that protects faculty members' rights to the maximum degree permitted by law.

Allegations of scientific misconduct are among the most serious that can be lodged against an investigator. Anyone contemplating such allegations should fully consider the gravity of the accusation and its consequences, and should make every reasonable effort to avoid lodging charges for capricious or arbitrary reasons.

Principal Investigators/Project Directors should ensure that all research associates, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, technicians and administrative assistants involved in University research programs have a copy of the Policy and Procedures for Review of Alleged Unethical Research Practices.
